Texans receiver Will Fuller broke his collarbone in the preseason and missed Houston’s first three games.

Chicago has allowed 300 yards or less in each of its last five games — a stretch that included three wins, including one each against Ben Roethlisberger and Cam Newton. Holding the Panthers to 293 yards in over 38 minutes in Week 7 was especially impressive. Veteran Akiem Hicks, former second-rounder Eddie Goldman, fast-rising youngster Jonathan Bullard and the steady Mitch Unrein have been central to this effort. Linebackers Leonard Floyd, Danny Trevathan, Pernell McPhee and Christian Jones have been playing very well, also, for the NFL’s seventh-best defense.

Texans receiverredskins_047 broke his collarbone in the preseason and missed Houston’s first three games. He returned in Week 4 with a bang, posting two touchdowns on his four receptions against the Titans. Some of you probably added him off the waiver wire at that point, and many of you likely didn’t buy in. But in Week 5, he did it again. Two receptions, two touchdowns against the Chiefs. Fun while it lasted, right? Wait, what? You can’t be serious. ANOTHER touchdown on one of his two receptions against the Browns in Week 6!? Stop the madness!

Browns coach Hue Jackson is going back to Kizer, the team announced Wednesday. He’ll start Sunday in London against the Minnesota Vikings. When Kizer was benched for Week 6 and Kevin Hogan started, Jackson said he thought Kizer learned the lessons he wanted him to learn. Now maybe Kizer has learned more lessons from his in-game benching in Week 7. Or, maybe the rookie has had his confidence ruined and will be looking over his shoulder with every errant pass. Either way.

Now, Fuller leads all NFL receivers in fantasy points per game, averaging a ridiculous 15.43 through three contests. Yep, that’s more than even Antonio Brown. Fuller has caught eight passes and scored on five of them. His 62.5 percent touchdown rate is complete lunacy.

Just how good is Shohei Ohtani, anyway?

He’s also allowed just 24 home runs (0.4 per nine) and a mere 384 hits, an impressive 6.4 per nine innings. In other words, Ohtani has the profile you’d expect from an accomplished young star with a triple-digit fastball. As a hitter, he has a career .286/.358/.500 slash line and has played a good deal of games in the outfield, so when we say he’s a good-hitting pitcher, we don’t mean it in the left-handed-compliment sense, as when we praise Madison Bumgarner’s offense while implicitly noting that pitchers hit terribly. Ohtani is in actual good-hitter territory.

Parker suffered a ruptured left quadriceps tendon last season during the Western Conference semifinals against the Houston Rockets and underwent surgery. But Parker continues to inch closer toward returning, and Popovich said he thinks Parker will be back “very soon.”

“For real, sooner than later. And I’m serious. I’m being honest,” he said.

I know it’s early, but early happened to him. Lonzo Ball is the most over-hyped player I have ever seen. May he catch his stride ????

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Joe Flacco is in the midst of one of the worst seasons of his career. Bad throws and poor decisions are the reasons why he ranks among the league leaders with 11 interceptions. But Flacco hasn’t had much help. Protection has been shoddy because the offensive line has been hit with injuries, and Flacco’s receivers have dropped too many passes. The Ravens need him to cut down on turnovers and stretch the field more in order to get them back to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. — Jamison Hensleynike_patriots_564

Colin Kaepernick Jersey will now find himself sitting across from the team owners he has accused of blackballing him.

Two sources told Yahoo Sports that Kaepernick has agreed to attend a meeting between a coalition of NFL players and owners sometime next week, in which the two sides will continue talks about the league’s engagement in social activism efforts. It’s the second time he has been invited to the meetings by members of the players’ coalition, but declined his first invite after confusion about whether the NFL was open to his attendance. This time around, the NFL has been notified that Kaepernick has been invited to join the meeting, despite it coming in the midst of his grievance against the league for allegedly conspiring to freeze him out of a job.

On the Cardinals subreddit, fans have found a new coping mechanism — ornithology.

The Browns have to figure out what they want. If they are desperate for wins at 0-7 – and this coaching staff that has lost 22 of 23 games probably should be – they should play the quarterback who gives them the best chance to win. If that’s Kizer, fine. Then stick with him even through the inevitable rookie mistakes. If player development is their goal – and since they’re not exactly making the playoffs this season, that is the objective that’s best for the franchise – then quit yanking Kizer around. It’s not like the Philadelphia Eagles hooked Carson Wentz (sorry, Browns fans) for every mistake as a rookie, and he has benefited from that this season.

When the Browns turned to Kizer as their starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, they had to know he was raw and there would be mistakes. Doing this weekly dance of waiting until he makes one or two of those mistakes and pulling him for Hogan or Cody Kessler Jersey or whichever quarterback the Browns have stashed on the bench isn’t good for anyone.

But Kizer gets another shot in Week 8. We’ll see how long it lasts this time.

Howard, Hornets rally to beat Wizards 129-124 in overtime

Dwight Howard had 26 points and 13 rebounds, including a key block at the end of regulation and a crucial offensive rebound in overtime, in the Charlotte Hornets’ 129-124 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist added a driving layup and Lamb buried a jumper from just beyond the foul line to push the lead to six with 1:24 remaining. But the big basket came when Lamb shot an air-ball on a 3-pointer and Howard grabbed the ball out of the air and laid it in to beat the shot clock.

The Wizards had allowed just 100 points in their previous seven games, but the Hornets shot 47 percent from the field.

Hornets guard Nic Batum left the game in the second quarter with a left elbow contusion and did not return. Batum missed the first 12 games of season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the same elbow.

If Batum is unable to go, Lamb would return to the starting lineup and rookie Malik Monk would likely see additional playing time. Fans began chanting “we want Monk” in the fourth quarter with the Hornets trailing by five points.

The NFL announced before Sunday’s Raiders-Patriots game in Mexico City that the league reached an agreement to continue playing one regular-season game a year in Mexico through 2021.

On Monday, Pats coach Bill Belichick, appearing on WEEI in Boston, said he isn’t exactly eager for his team to go back:

“Personally, I wouldn’t be in any big rush to do it again. It’s a long way to go for a game. There’s a lot to it in terms of all the logistics of it. They are not used to having a NFL team so you have to go in there and handle a lot of the logistics. It took a lot of manpower, a lot of hours, a lot of energy out of our organization to do that. This week, we’re tired. We are exhausted from the trip. It was a good trip, but it took a lot out of us I think.

2017 NFL trade deadline tracker: Latest deals, reaction

Benjamin will be reunited with Bills coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, both of whom used to work in Carolina. His arrival gives quarterback Tyrod Taylor a No. 1 receiver after Buffalo dealt away top receiver Sammy Watkins in August. Without Watkins, the team’s receivers have caught 45 passes for 594 yards, the lowest totals for that position group in the NFL. Benjamin has 32 catches for two touchdowns and a Panthers-best 475 yards this season.

I let them do all of that, that’s not where my energy is. It’s not about the bottom line. I’ll get more involved if it turns into a brand. As far as my immediate goal right now, it’s just to get shoes on kids. We’ll continue to do it. We want to re-write what it means to be an athlete. You get cash, high fives and hugs but it’s a lot more than that.

Christian Covington, DE, Houston Texans: Covington suffered an arm injury in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks, and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. He had seen an increased role since Texans defensive end J.J. Watt broke his leg in Week 5, and started Sunday in Seattle.

Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic have drawn a lot of attention during their current three-game winning streak, highlighted by a 69–31 romp over North Texas, one of the top teams in Conference USA, last weekend. The Owls are averaging 677 yards and 64 points in thier first two games this month. But the other new head coach down in South Florida also deserves some credit.

It makes sense as a blueprint since the Steelers QB played a style like Newton’s, willing to hold the ball and take hits early in his career.

This was supposed to be a happy story.

To come out to Vegas and cover the first home game of the city’s first major league sports team.

Inaugural games are often fraught with mixed feelings. It’s hard to watch the L.A. Chargers without thinking of the fans left behind in San Diego. It will feel the same way when the Raiders eventually kick off in this same city, to know how many scorned fans remain in Oakland.

Manager A.J. Hinch, a congenial and even-tempered Stanford graduate, opened a news conference at Minute Maid by shooting down a report that he had been involved in a bar altercation with some rowdy Dodgers fans in Pasadena, California. Then commissioner Rob Manfred had to dispense some justice when TV cameras captured Houston first baseman Yuli Gurriel making racially insensitive gestures in the direction of Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish from the dugout.

“Tonight’s loss and the last couple are unacceptable, and the only way we’re going to be able to get out of it is to put the work in — as players, as coaches,” Lue said. “And we’re going to do that. … When you lose to teams the way we’ve been getting beat, it’s unacceptable.”

Cain’s 331 starts rank second in Giants history, after Hall of Famer Juan Marichal; he was a three-time All-Star; he threw that magical perfect game, still the only one in the team’s 135-year history.

Carolina Panthers (7:30 a.m.): With C Ryan Kalil once again ruled out with a neck injury and being described as “week to week,” chances of the Panthers’ offense suddenly clicking back into place seem a bit slimmer for Week 8.

Adam Schefter’s overnight update (7:15 a.m.): Sources report to Schefter that Jameis Winston will start at quarterback for Tampa Bay. Melvin Gordon, though likely to be hampered by his injured foot, will also play on Sunday for the Chargers. Golden Tate plans to suit up for Detroit in the night game. Carolina did not activate Roberto Aguayo from the practice squad, meaning they are “committed” to Graham Gano, ankle issue and all.

Marlins Man is everywhere, so it’s only right that he should make an appearance at your Halloween party.

Has there ever been a 6-2 team heading into its bye with three legitimate possibilities to start at quarterback the rest of the way? You could make the case that it’s crazy to take Case Keenum out while the Vikings are winning, but he’s 25th in the league in touchdown passes and 22nd in yards per attempt. If Teddy Bridgewater and/or Sam Bradford is ready in two weeks, is it crazy to try to elevate the team’s ceiling at the sport’s most important position?

Jacksonville’s defense looks legit, and Marcus Mariota was Watson before Watson was, so it’s not as if the rest of the division is going to step aside and watch this guy’s coronation. The Texans and their young quarterback still have plenty of work to do, and those who would tout Watson for MVP should remember that MVPs almost always have winning records.

He’s also famous for having ridiculously good seats, which gives you a built-in excuse to sit down for extended periods of time.

Get it? Because the U.S. lost to Trinidad and Tobago to miss the 2018 World Cup? This is still painful, and the best way to deal with painful situations is to make light of them. This is also a witty retort to the always annoying question of “why didn’t you come”: Just say you were dressed up as the USMNT at the World Cup. Zing!

Entering Saturday, the total had gone over in each of the past six meetings between these teams, including last season when Oklahoma won 66-59 in Lubbock. It looked like a similar scoring output was in store on Saturday night, as the Sooners led 20-14 in the first quarter.canadiens_402_dc0e4496f1e6c64e-180x180

Saints RB Mark Ingram feels like he let team down after two fourth-quarter fumbles in win

Mark Ingram didn’t mince words after his two fourth-quarter fumbles nearly cost the New Orleans Saints their fifth straight victory.

Ingram was on his way to becoming the MVP of New Orleans’ win on Sunday before his first fumble came with 7:32 remaining and the Saints leading 17-6. Until that point, he had 15 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown, plus six catches for 24 yards in a game in which New Orleans’ plan was to keep the ball away from Chicago’s opportunistic defense.

Ingram’s next fumble came on the next possession after Chicago closed within 17-12 (on his second carry of the drive). He didn’t touch the ball again on New Orleans’ final possession.

Ball was meant to be the biggest attraction of the night, but he got a full-throated welcome to the NBA from Patrick Beverley, perhaps the most annoying point guard to have to face in your professional debut. Beverley bulldogged Ball all over the court, living in his jersey on defense with an intense physicality. Beverley even showed Ball a thing or two on offense.

Lonzo will have to get used to facing his opponents’ best every night. Fair or not, the young guard has a glowing target on his back, and playing in a city thirsty for relevance won’t help him stay under the radar. Ball doesn’t seem like the type to shy away from the spotlight, even if that could help him face some less motivated competition.

The six-game suspension stems from a domestic violence allegation by Elliott’s former girlfriend in July of 2016. Goodell decided there was enough “persuasive evidence supporting” Tiffany Thompson’s allegations of domestic abuse.blues-019

The Lonzo Ball Revolution Won’t Happen Overnight

After months of overeager-dad generated hype, Lonzo Ball’s actual NBA debut Thursday left a lot to be desired. Those who stayed up late on the East Coast were treated to a blowout, with the Clippers maintaining their status as the top dog in L.A. with a 108–92 win. Ball, expected to help bring the Lakers back to contender status, didn’t exactly bring them any closer on night one.

Ball finished with a pedestrian line—3 points, 4 assists and 9 rebounds. The Lakers still look more like a collection of parts than an actual team. The occasional thrill of Julius Randle creating his own offense or Brandon Ingram making a nice play at the rim was offset by inattentive defense and a lack of mature talent. Brook Lopez is clearly the best player on the Lakers, and he must be wondering how he’s being shuttled from rebuilding project to rebuilding project.

“I sucked,” Ingram said — a total of 18 times, if you include the word “sucky.” He also mixed in “I was terrible” and “I was whack” a handful of times as he faced the fire after New Orleans escaped with a 20-12 victory over the Chicago Bears.

“I let my teammates down. I put us in a bad position. The game was only close because I sucked. That’s the bottom line,” said Ingram, who had never before lost two fumbles in a game in his seven-year career and now has a career-high three lost fumbles this season.

“I sucked. I sucked. That’s the bottom line: I sucked. Two possessions we’re about to ice the game, and I sucked,” Ingram said. “Let the ball go, hurt my team, hurt my coaches. That’s the thing about a family, that’s the thing about a team: They lift you up, they had my back, and we were able to get the W. But I was whack, I sucked, and I’ll be better.”

J.T. Barrett throws record-setting 91st TD pass of Ohio State career

“We don’t care about what anyone else thinks about J.T. because we know what we think about J.T. and what he brings to the table,” McLaurin said.

Barrett finished the day 33-of-39 passing for 328 yards and four TDs. He also had 17 carries for 95 yards.

“I’ve never had a kid play perfect, but damn he was close tonight,” Meyer said.

Barrett, who also has run for 36 touchdowns in the past three-plus years, started the season with more total touchdowns than any other player in Ohio State history.

Ex-Michigan quarterback Chad Henne ranks third in Big Ten history with 87 touchdown passes.

“He is the [Mike] Tyson of basketball,” Kidd, a former star point guard himself, said before the Bucks lost 110-91 to Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder. “When the jump ball [goes up], he is coming as Tyson did [in getting] off the stool. When the bell rings, he’s coming for you. Whenever he’s on the floor, he plays at one speed, and that’s fast and hard. He’s a little different in that case that he’s probably the only [No.] 1, and then I would put [at] 1B in that same category John Wall. Just that speed of coming at you every time you’re on the floor. There is no kind of walking the ball up; they are coming at you and causing problems.”

Kidd was very complimentary of Westbrook and his playing style. The pair exchanged a quick handshake and greetings before Tuesday’s game.

“He’s the best in the game,” Kidd said of Westbrook, the reigning league MVP. “Puts a lot of pressure on your defense, offensively and defensively. For him, he can make the adjustment, play with talented guys like [Paul] George and Melo [Carmelo Anthony]. For him, his game doesn’t change. He puts a lot of pressure offensively on that break, just finding the open guy and making the game easy.”

Westbrook finished the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists.
